1. General Information

San Pedro del Pinatar is a municipality in the Mar Menor comarca, located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and the Mar Menor lagoon. It belongs to Murcia province on the border with Alicante province. The town is 37 km from Cartagena, 58 km from Murcia and 22 km from Torrevieja.

To the north lies the Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar natural park. As of 2018, the official population was 25,167. It is one of the smallest municipalities in the Murcia region at just 22 square kilometres. The population is distributed across San Pedro del Pinatar itself and its surroundings: Lo Pagan, Los Saes and El Mojon.

The town received its name in the 17th century when Franciscans erected a chapel in honour of Saint Peter the Apostle near the extensive pine forests that gave the area its earlier name, El Pinatar.

From Palaeolithic Iberian settlements through Roman salt extraction and Arab fishing techniques (“encanizadas” - circular labyrinth traps still used only here), to the 17th-century Franciscan chapel that gave the town its name. An independent town council was created in 1836. The 20th century brought two major floods (1919, 1987) and significant population growth from the tourism boom.

Part of San Pedro sits on a peninsula between the Mediterranean and Mar Menor lagoon. 14 km of coastline between two seas.

Mar Menor side: Playa de la Mota, Playa de Villananitos, Playa de la Puntica. Mediterranean side: Playa el Mojon, Playa de la Torre Derribada, Playa de las Salinas, Playa Punta de Algas, Playa de la Barraca Quemada.

Beaches Las Salinas, Barraca Quemada and Punta de Algas form the 3-km La Llana coast within the protected natural park. Playa de la Torre Derribada is one of the most modern beaches, over 2 km of fine golden sand. On the lagoon side, 1-km La Mota beach offers dark sand with sailing, windsurfing and kite surfing. Villananitos (700 m) has crystal-clear water and full infrastructure. Playa de la Puntica is the oldest beach on Mar Menor, used for swimming since the late 19th century.
