Who buys luxury Spain

There are countries whose wealthy citizens show particular interest in Spanish elite real estate. Among them, Germans stand out, accounting for 18% of luxury real estate inquiries, according to the latest study published by Idealista.

In second place are the British (11%), followed by the French (10%), Americans (9%) and Dutch (7%).

Which regions of Spain are most attractive to the wealthiest?

Foreign interest in luxury housing is concentrated primarily in 10 provinces, which account for 93% of views of properties worth over one million euros in Spain.

The Balearic Islands are the most popular destination among foreign buyers of luxury real estate: 29% of foreigners’ search queries for luxury properties are for the islands. Here, the main buyers of expensive real estate are Germans (36% of all foreign inquiries), British (11%), French (8%), Dutch (8%) and Swedes (5%).

The ranking of 10 most interesting provinces for luxury housing buyers also includes Malaga, which accounts for 16% of foreigners’ inquiries for luxury properties. British and Swedes lead (12% each), followed by Germans (9%), Dutch (8%) and Americans (7%).

Third place in the ranking is occupied by Madrid with 15% of inquiries. The distribution by countries in this region is quite even, however, the most views of elite housing come from US citizens (18%), followed by Great Britain (9%), France (6%), Mexico (5%) and Portugal (5%).

Barcelona took fourth place with 11% of foreign inquiries for luxury real estate. Americans view properties most frequently (14%), followed by Germans (9%), British (9%), French (9%) and Dutch (5%).

Fifth place is occupied by the province of Alicante, which accounts for 8% of inquiries for elite properties in Spain from foreigners. The Dutch are most active (15%), followed by Germans (14%), British (11%), French (10%) and Swedes (6%).

Next follows Girona (4% of all inquiries), where the French show the greatest interest (39%), then the Dutch (13%), Germans (10%), British (7%) and Americans (6%).

Seventh and eighth places in the ranking are occupied by the provinces of the Canary Islands, each accounting for 3% of international inquiries. In both provinces, Germans are most interested in luxury real estate - 26% in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and 24% in Las Palmas. They are followed by the British - 11% each in both island provinces; Italians - 9% each; French - 8% each. Poles are the fifth most active nationality in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (6%), while in Las Palmas this position is occupied by Swedes (6%).

Valencia is the ninth most attractive market for international buyers (2%). The main inquiries for elite properties in the province come from France (13%), USA (12%), Great Britain (11%), Germany (10%) and Netherlands (8%).

The ranking is completed by the province of Cadiz with 2% of the total number of inquiries for luxury real estate. Most often, British look for properties here (23%), followed by Germans (18%), Americans (10%), French (8%) and Dutch (6%).
