Recently, the announcement of the sale of the town of Camarasa in Catalonia for almost one million euros made a lot of noise. It reminded of the dying villages and ghost towns.

The announcement of the sale appeared in July on several real estate portals. The village was put up for sale by the fincascos agency, specializing in houses, masias and fincas, many of which are abandoned or in need of repair.

For 990,000 euros you can buy an entire ghost town with a dozen buildings, a park, a swimming pool and tennis courts. The story of prosperity and decline is quite revealing, an example of how quickly progress can change our lives, for better or for worse. At the beginning of the 20th century it was here, at the confluence of the rivers Noguera Pallaresa and Segre, that the electric company Riegos y Fuerza del Ebro decided to build one of the first dams and power plants that would supply electricity to Catalonia.

At that time, many towns in Spain did not have a normal water supply and electricity, and Camarasa was a piece of civilization in the virgin forest.

The power plant was erected in 1912 and a small town for the company's management and service personnel was built nearby. The houses in the town were built in an unusual English style, with warm bathrooms and electrical appliances. The town had light on the streets, sports fields, a swimming pool, courts, and a school for children with guest teachers.

In many ways it was an elitist place. And along with the English administration in the town, the English order was reigning. At 5 o'clock in the afternoon the town bell announced that it was time for tea.

So stark a contrast to what the town has become after only 100 years. Many of the houses are de-energized and abandoned, and some have broken windows. And the only thing that protects them from looting is a sign reminding you of private property.


With the modernization of the power plant in the 1980s, some of the staff left the town, and since the 1990s it has been completely empty. Although the power plant is still operating today, you can take a tour and watch tons of water being discharged through giant concrete barriers.

The houses have been standing abandoned for almost 30 years, the utilities and communications need to be updated. So before you start earning money, you have to invest quite heavily in infrastructure and reconstruction.

Nevertheless, real estate market experts look at this proposal in a positive way. Yes, it is "long" money and first will have to invest a lot, but the place is very promising both from the point of tourism development, and from the increase in demand for country houses and rural routes.

Tourism in the region is very well developed: water, mountain tourism, hiking, so the municipality hopes that the new owner of the town will breathe a second life into it, bring it in order and make it a center of tourist attraction. After all, those who do hiking or canoeing do not mind taking a break for a couple of nights.
