The urban area includes 23 km of coastline on which Muchavista beach stands out - the continuation of Alicante San Juan beach, which is located on the border with Campello. Near the beach runs the Monnegre River, also called the Rio Seco – the Dry River (due to the lack of water actively used in agriculture).

Campoglio's orography is flat in its southern part, while in the north of the municipality the foothills of Cabezón de Oro rise; Alto del Blanquinar is the highest point of the city – 455 m above sea level.

4. History

Until 1901, Campello was a village and a part of Alicante. After that date, it separated and became an independent municipality with its own town hall.

On the outskirts of Campello is the peninsula of La Isleta. It was an island until the 1940s. In 1944, using the explosion, the landscape of this place was changed, and a land isthmus was built. Thus, the historical landscape was restored — a long time ago there were a peninsula. Once, as a result of an earthquake, a piece of land was separated from the mainland. On this peninsula is the archaeological site of Illeta dels Banyets, where the most ancient remains were found, indicating the settlement of these places from the end of the 3rd millennium BC.

In the 5th century BC, Iberians lived on the territory of La Isleta. However, the Iberian settlement was abandoned as early as the 3rd century BC. This period includes vessels, weapons, tombs and remains of ceramics discovered during excavations, as well as unique buildings. All this, probably, testifies to the important activity connected with the production and trade with other peoples of the Mediterranean between the 2nd and 4th centuries BC.

In Roman times, an agricultural village with small baths was built here on Iberian and prehistoric ruins. From that time, were preserved pools — a kind of dike connected to the sea for the fish growing. Later they were called the Baths of the Queen (Baños de la Reina), since according to famous legends, these pools were considered baths of the Moorish queen.

Since the 11th century, the territory of the municipality, like all the surrounding lands, belonged to Islamic states. After the Christian conquest of this area by King Alfonso X of Castile, in the middle of the 13th century, Campello became part of the city of Alicante, under the rule of the Castile Crown.

The border between the Castilian and Aragonese kingdoms ran in the north of the municipality. In this regard, between the cities of Campello and Villajoyosa (17 km to the north) there are no settlements, except for the urbanizations built at the end of the 20th century. This dispersal contrasts with the high population density of the province of Alicante as a whole.

In 1304, the border of the Kingdom of Aragon shifted south, so that Campello, together with Alicante, became part of the Kingdom of Valencia as a result of the Arbitration award in Torrellas. In 1475, all the land in the area of the current municipality of Campello belonged to Don Alfonso Martinez de Vera, a descendant of the kings of Navarre, under the jurisdiction of Alicante. The numerous raids of the Berber pirates, which constantly attacked the entire Levantine coast in the 16th century, led to the construction in 1554–1557 of two defensive watchtowers in Campello: La Torre Illeta and La torre del Barranc d'Aigües or de Reixes.

After passing through several hands, in the 18th century, the majorat became the property of Don Nicolas Perez de Sarrio, who began to colonize municipal lands, and in 1775 the basic provisions for the creation of a village in the area were signed. Towards the end of this century, the first shipyard was built in Campello at the mouth of the Rio Seco (Montnegre), which gave impetus to the development of the fishing industry and the fishermen's quarter (Barrio de Pescadores). Nowadays, the port, together with the yacht club and the old fishing quarter, has become the centre of the city and a place of tourist attraction.
In 1873, Campello created its parish in a local church. Before this, residents were served by the parish church of San Juan. And finally, in 1901, Campello became an administratively independent municipality.

In 1914, a railway line (Trenet de la Marina) was laid through from Alicante to Denia, which passed through Campello, which greatly contributed to the economic and urban development of the municipality. Since the 1950s, tourism and proximity to Alicante, together with a severe urban boom, have significantly changed the face of Campello.

5. Beaches

A large number of beaches and picturesque bays, as well as exceptional weather conditions throughout the year, make Campello an ideal place for a full beach holiday and all kinds of water sports, including fishing, diving and surfing.

The long coastline of El Campello includes several landscaped beaches and numerous bays of all kinds: from vast beaches of golden sand like Muchavista to secluded rocky bays like Coveta Fumà, or sandy like Lanuza. The coastal area is surrounded by the mountain ranges of Puntes de Gosalves, Xixí and Lloma de Reixes. The latter is of great environmental interest due to the large number of local species of flora and fauna and the almost complete absence of human intervention in the development process, which is so characteristic of the rest of the municipality. It should be noted that this area is declared a protected natural area.

Besides, the marine environment of El Campello offers diving enthusiasts the opportunity to explore exciting routes underwater. Among them is the popular route "Los baños de la Reina", which begins in the northern part of Illeta dels Banyets, where the eponymous archaeological site is located.

In front of the beaches of Coveta Fumá and Carritxal, there is an artificial reef stretching for 7 km, one kilometre wide. This reef contributes to the restoration of colonies of valuable Posidonia algae and an increase in the number of marine species.

The main city beaches of Muchavista (Playa Muchavista) and Carrer la Mar (Playa Carrer del Mar) are well equipped. They have all the necessary amenities so that a vacation by the sea for all who come here becomes ideal and unforgettable, regardless of whether the person comes to relax alone, with family or friends. Both beaches have a Blue Flag Award, as well as ISO 14.001 environmental quality certificates for bathing water, environmental care and cleanup, and ISO 9.001 for beach services and equipment provided.
Playa Muchavista — main beach of the city
Playa Muchavista
The wide and long beach of Muchavista (3300 m long and 80 m wide) is covered with fine golden sand. It borders the beach of Alicante San Juan (San Juan Playa), and at its northern end, cliffs and secluded coves with clear waters follow each other, creating a unique bewitching landscape. Muchavista is an excellent place for swimming, water sports such as windsurfing or bodyboarding. On the pedestrian 3-kilometre embankment along which the modern tram line runs, it is convenient to go in for sports walking or jogging. By the way, this comfortable tram leaves from Campello in Alicante every 30 minutes.

In the summer months, a rich program of events is held on the beach of Muchavista, which includes showing films at the cinema, the work of the beach library and game zone, and various sporting events. Besides, the beach is well equipped with everything necessary for people with disabilities. All this, together with a developed tourist infrastructure, makes Muchavista beach a very comfortable and attractive place for residents and visitors of the city.

Near the port and the yacht club, along the pedestrian promenade, stretches Carrer del Mar beach of golden sand. It is the central beach of the municipality, located near the old quarter of the fishermen and the tower Illeta (Torre de La Illeta). The length of the beach is 1850 m, and the width reaches 75 m. The Carrer del Mar beach has recently been restored and now, thanks to its long shores with very smooth entry into the water, it is especially popular among vacationers with children.

Along the beach runs the promenade of El Campello, over 1 km long (Paseo Marítimo de la Platja Carrer la Mar), very lively both in summer and in winter. There are many restaurants, ice cream parlours and a variety of shops.

Paseo Marítimo de la Platja Carrer la Mar
Carrer del Mar beach itself offers a lot of interesting entertainments. There is a sailing club with a marina, a children's park, an archaeological site, as well as a rental service for windsurfing equipment and surfboards. On the coast there is a breakwater from which you can safely fish or just enjoy the sea views.

At the end of the Paseo Marítimo de la Platja Carrer la Mar, at the mouth of the Rio Seco River, there is the extensive Punta del Riu beach, where you can swim and dive. In the area, at the end of the 18th century, the first shipyard was built, whose remains are preserved by the Association of Fishermen.

Illeta dels Banyets is the name given to the entire beach area around the archaeological site of Illeta dels Banyets, which consists of a rocky platform and a small rocky bay. It is an ideal place for both free-swimming and scuba diving.
Behind the Marine Club, next to the archaeological site of Illeta dels Banyates, is the Bassa de la Reina (Queen's Pool). According to a beautiful local legend, in ancient times, when the Arabs inhabited these lands, there were baths of the Moorish queen. However, in reality, these pools served the Romans as fish farms. Be that as it may, now these places are famous for stunning landscapes and crystal clear waters. For lovers of scuba diving and contemplation of the sea beauties there is a snorkelling route "Los Baños de la Reina".

The small (600 m) semi-urban beach of De L'Almadrava, made of sand and gravel, is also located near the archaeological site of Illeta dels Banyets. You can get here from the beautiful seafront, which borders the Voramar de les Escultures promenade, where the work of the sculptor Vicente Ferrero is presented.

To the north is the semi-natural bay of De L'Amerador, with gravel sand and calm water, 800 m long and 20m wide.

Between the beaches of l'Alamdrava and l'Amerador is a small rocky bay Cala del Llop Mari. These places attract diving enthusiasts due to the rich fauna, flora and geological diversity – there are hollows of great ecological and landscape value.

The bay of Cala del Morro Blanc, which is located northeast of the beach of l'Amerador, residents of the municipality are also called Coveta Fumá. This coarse-grained bay is not very deep and offers excellent conditions for a family beach holiday. And given the purity of its waters and the abundance of marine life, it is also ideal for diving.

The 500-meter-long natural beach of del Barranc d'Aigües made of stones and gravel is located in a beautiful protected natural area near the Platja de les Llomes de Reixes at the foot of the watchtower of the same name. This remote stone bay, almost virgin, creates a unique pastoral image of the El Campello coast. The water in the bay is deep blue.

Still northeast is the bay of Cala Baeza, which was formerly called Cala La Merced or El portet de la Merced. There is a small port, giving the area a traditional rustic flavour. The picturesque bay of golden sand, with calm water, is surrounded by small cliffs and shrubs.

Nearby is another 250-meter bay with fine golden sand – Cala Lanuza. It is very popular among families with children due to calm waters. A line of palm trees borders the beach, and the cliffs fringing the bay are ideal for snorkelling and finding crabs. Next to Cala Lanuza is Cala de las Palmeretes - a small natural bay made of stones and gravel with crystal clear waters. It's good to swim, dive, go fishing. In the bay there is a small cave, at the entrance to which fingerprints of palm leaves were found, which gave the name to the beach. Such a sign was usually painted as a sign of happiness at the entrance to the dwelling.

The farthest beach – Platja del Carritxal – Campello shares with the neighbouring town of Villajoyosa. This beach of coarse sand and gravel is of great environmental value.

6. Sights

Near the yacht club and the peninsula of La Isleta, on a hill is one of the main attractions of Campello and the symbol of the city - Torre de la Illeta. This tower was built between 1554 and 1557 to prevent attacks by Berber pirates. Viceroy of Valencia, Don Bernardino de Cardenas y Pacheco, Duke of Maqueda, ordered the construction of a whole system of watchtowers on the coast. Four men were assigned to each tower: two horsemen and two foot guards. At the time of the enemy's discovery, the horsemen went to the authorities with a warning. And those remaining in the tower signaled the approach of enemy ships — by bonfires at night and smoke signals in the afternoon.

This stone tower is built in the shape of a truncated cone, the diameter of the base is 6 meters, in the high part – 5 meters. The front door is located at the top in the middle of the tower, so a Jacob's ladder or rope was required to access inside. In 1991, Torre de la Illeta was declared an object of cultural interest and restored.

Near the beach of De Les Llomes De Reixes is the second watchtower - Torre del Barranc d'Aigües, or Torre de Reixes. Like Illeta Tower, it was built in the second half of the 17th century. The tower is located in a safe place in the middle of a magnificent natural landscape. There was a border between the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon, before these territories were included in the kingdom of Valencia.

The cylindrical tower is 8 meters in diameter at the base and 10 meters in height. Unfortunately, at present, the upper part of the structure is destroyed, and cracks have already begun on the remaining base.

Villa Marco, located near the Muchavista beach, dates from the mid-19th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, the then owner of the villa, Rene Barden, father of the former honorary consul of France in Alicante, created beautiful Versailles gardens and endowed the building with modernist elements along with curious references to French colonial art. This mixture of styles significantly distinguishes the estate from other estates of the region.

Throughout its history, gardens have undergone some changes, while maintaining their original structure. The garden around this house has several curved alleys, decorated with goblets and flower vases in the classicist style. The garden is divided into five zones: the "Arabian garden" (originally used as an orchard garden), the so-called "historical garden", where the largest representatives of the flora are located, the "access garden", framing the passage to the arriving crews, the small "Mediterranean garden" with local plants and a large "Mediterranean forest" of pines. In the gardens you can find two sculptures of the famous artist Alicante Vicente Banyuls "Night" and "Marseillaise".

At the foot of the Torre de la Illeta, the La Voramar de les Escultures promenade begins, which runs along the coast to Almadraba Beach. This ecological route is accompanied by six information panels from the Institute of Coastal Ecology, which allow you to learn about the biological and anthropological characteristics of the natural environment. During a walk along the route, you can enjoy the sculptures of the artist Vicente Ferrero, the common theme of which is a woman who is in complete harmony with the surrounding landscape: "Bather", "Torso" and "Reading Girl".

One of the oldest places in Campello is the Plaza de Canalejas, which houses some of the most emblematic buildings of the city – the parish church of St. Theresa and the Municipal Library (Biblioteca Municipal). This square is rightfully considered the cultural and social centre of the city – throughout the year, numerous festive and religious events are held here.

The parish church was built in 1849, replacing the first church of the late 18th century. It is dedicated to the patron saint Teresa and Our Lady of the Les Miserables (Virgen de los Desamparados). Despite several extensions and rebuilds, this small-sized church has retained its original beauty.

On this square are two other representative buildings of Campello - the Municipal Library named after Rafael Altamir and a modern building in the style of urbanism.

A close look at the nearby streets reveals an Art Nouveau facade and a hidden square.

Another notable Campello church is the Chapel of Our Lady of Carmen (Ermita de la Virgen del Carmen), the patroness of sailors, built in 1960 with the donations of the sailors themselves. The tiled altar of the chapel depicts the Virgin in the image of "Stella Maris" ("Star of the Seas"), a faithful protector of sailors who made their way in the vast ocean, guided by the stars.

On the Constitution Square (Plaça de la Constitució) there is the House of Culture and a concert hall (Casa de Cultura y Auditorio). It equipped with facilities for various cultural events, such as music school classes, a concert hall, an open-air theatre and exhibition halls, among which the museum collection FAMEC (Municipal Art Funds El Campello - Fondos Artísticos Municipales de El Campello) stands out. Here is a wonderful collection of paintings and sculptures donated to the municipality as a result of temporary exhibitions organized in this cultural centre.

The population growth in Campello and the popularity of the resort among holidaymakers led to the creation of interesting parks in the city with sports grounds and modern facilities for children's games. The picturesque gardens and landscape areas of the municipality boast a variety of botanical species, among which there are many endemic plants, as well as interesting architectural objects. So, in the Parc Municipal El Campello, an impressive Fuente del Centenario is installed with night lighting, and near the fountain there is a sculptural composition by Carmen Fraile, referring to the historical roots of the municipality. One group consists of two life-size sculptures and a bas-relief on a concrete wall, illustrating the process of spinning fibre from hemp – the oldest craft of Campello. The second group is called "Grandfather and girl" – these are the figures of an old man and a little girl, which symbolize the past and future of the municipality.

Near the building of the police department of Campello is the Children's Park of Road Traffic (El Parque Infantil de Tráfico), whose doors are open for all boys and girls on bicycles and roller skates. On an area of about 1000 square meters, there are traffic signs and stripes with markings. Roads are equipped with traffic lights, signs and pedestrian crossings. The park also has green areas, children's playgrounds, benches – everything is arranged so that families with children can spend time here with pleasure and benefit. Another creative project of the municipality deserves mention. This is MaALeEC (Museo al Aire Libre en El Campello) – a kind of open-air museum. This project was designed to decorate the city, giving brightness to the unpresentable territories of the municipality – to paint grey walls or structures with the bright works of creative artists. These vivid islands of creativity and expression can be seen in different parts of the city; new objects appear periodically. You can see the painted places on the map here. And you can find out details about the project on this site.

7. Holidays

Throughout the year, residents of Campello celebrate a large number of traditional holidays and organize grandiose events on historical and religious topics, giving the guests of the city and themselves an unforgettable experience.

The year begins with the famous and beloved holiday – the Cavalcade of the Magi. On January 5, three magi arrive by sea from the East with gifts for all obedient children. Festive processions and parades take place along the main streets from the port to Church Square (Plaza de la Iglesia), where the Church of St. Theresa is located.

On January 17, Church Square hosts a traditional parade dedicated to the blessing of animals and the distribution of "pa beneit" (blessed bread) in honour of the feast of St. Anthony (Sant Antoni del Porquet). According to history, this saint discovered divine wisdom and love by observing nature. From this revelation, he acquired the ability to bless animals and plants. After his death, St. Anthony was revered as the patron saint of livestock farmers and the protector of pets.
Before Easter, carnivals are held, consisting of many events held in the indoor sports pavilion. Among them are a fashionable costume party, popular games, music events and many others.

On Saturday, before or after Father's Day, the feast of St. Joseph is celebrated. St. Joseph Association invites you to enjoy rice pancakes (a dessert traditional for this day) and delicious hot chocolate on Church Square, as well as take part in masterclasses and family events.

During Holy Week (Semana Santa), residents participate in the procession, carrying palm leaves for the blessing. From that moment, Holy Week events begin, among which stand out the Procession of Silence (Jueves de Pasión) and the Procession of the Holy Burial (Santo Entierro). Semana Santa ends with the traditional Mona's Day (Día de Mona), when families have a meal in the city or on the beach.

At the end of the Lent, children who celebrated their first communion go out to the procession through colourful streets decorated with many flowers - this is how Corpus Christi (Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ) celebrates in Campello.

At the end of May, on the feast of the Mary Help of Christians ("Maria Auxiliadora"), which is very popular in the municipality, the inhabitants, together with the image of the Virgin, make a pilgrimage (Romeria de Maria Auxiliadora) to the Salesian parish. The event ends there with a fraternal meal and a solemn mass. At the end of the day, the Virgin Mary returns to the parish church of St. Theresa.
One of the most spectacular and beloved celebrations in Campello is a celebration in honour of the Virgen del Carmen, the patroness of sailors (Fiestas de la Virgen del Carmen). The official holiday date is July 16, but the celebrations take place over several days. Activities include a sea procession on Carrer la Mar beach and the transfer of the Virgin to her chapel, where the hymn "Hail Queen" (Canto de la Salve) is sung. The holiday ends with a large firework and a pyro-music show.

October 9 is marked with great enthusiasm by the Day of the Valencian Community - in a sense, this event precedes the festival "Moors and Christians." On the night of October 8, the Salpassa dance ensemble performs on Calle Pal, and on the central streets, the traditional street ensemble "Correfocs" performs. On the 9th there are civil processions, dances at the Calle Pal and the day of St. Dionysius, the patron saint of all lovers in Valencia ("mocadorà de Sant Dionns") is celebrated. The tradition of La Mocadorà holiday is that on this day men give women a handkerchief ("mocador" in Valencian). Inside are Marzipan sweets are of various shapes and colours - the form of vegetables and fruits representing the Valencia Gardens (Huerta de Valencia) .

From October 11 to October 15, the festival "Moors and Christians" is held in Campello. Landing of the Moors takes place on Carrer la Mar beach, followed by other obligatory events: an embassy in front of the castle on Saint Christol les Alèz square, colourful parades and flower offerings that fill the streets of the municipality with music and light. On the 15th, festivities are held in honour of St. Theresa and the Virgin of the Les Miserables, which end with a magnificent firework.
